On the evening of Saturday, 28th September, 2019, at a ceremony held at the Pride Inn Hotel, Westlands, Nairobi, The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation’s Watoto wa Mwelusi by Mwenda Mbatiah, was declared the overall winner of the coveted Text Book Centre Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature 2019 in the Kiswahili Adult Category.

The biennial awards have been running since 1972, under the stewardship of the Kenya Publishers Association. The event for awarding the winners, also served as the closing ceremony of the 22nd Nairobi International Book Fair. The fair, which runs for five days, had tens of publishers participating and was attended by thousands of people drawn from all walks of life.

The Adult Category winner pocketed KSh. 300,000 while the Youth Category winner got KSh. 150, 000. For the Children’s Category, the winner took home KSh. 75, 000.
